Loyola Hardly Overpowering, but Still Gets Past Buffalo, 76-72
AMHERST, N.Y. — Zan Mason had 20 points and Loyola Marymount overcame a cold-shooting touch down the stretch and defeated winless Buffalo, 76-72, Wednesday night.
Ross Richardson and Bill Mazurie added 15 points apiece for the Lions (4-5). Devon Chambers was high for the Bulls (0-8) with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Kelvin Brown added 20.
Loyola pulled out the victory despite not scoring a field goal in the final 4:56. The Bulls weren’t scoring at will, however. They had seven different opportunities to take the lead in the final four minutes, but failed each time. Their last chance came with six seconds left when Brown missed a 12-foot jumper.
The Lions took the lead for good, 73-70, with 4:56 remaining on a three-point basket by Mazurie. The Bulls made it 73-72 on a basket by Modie Cox with 4:27 left but were unable to score thereafter.
Rahim Harris made a free throw with two seconds left and Mason sealed the victory with two free throws with one second remaining.
“Any time you can pick up a win on the road you’ve got to be happy,†Loyola Coach John Olive said. “However, I wasn’t completely satisfied with the effort tonight.â€
