BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Western’s Defense Sparks Fast Start in 57-30 Victory Over Fullerton

Western’s rugged defense limited Fullerton to one field goal in the first 11 minutes of the game en route to a 57-30 victory for the championship of the Fullerton Holiday Tournament Friday night at Fullerton High School.
Western (8-1) outscored the Indians, 16-3, in the first quarter to record its eighth consecutive victory.
“We have to depend on our defense because we are not a scoring machine,” said first-year Western Coach Matt Cavanaugh. “Don’t expect us to score many games in the 70s.”
Tournament most valuable player Frank Floyd scored 25 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots to pace the Pioneers.
In other Fullerton tournament games:
Canyon 71, La Mirada 64--The Comanches (7-2) scored the final nine points of the first half to take a 34-29 lead and were never headed to take third place.
Cerritos 68, Brethren Christian 66 (2OT)--Desmond Victor scored 28 points to pace the Dons to the consolation title.
Buena Park 45, Los Altos 42 (2OT)--Jayson Fields scored 20 points to lead the Coyotes (5-3) to the seventh-place victory.
