Downey Fan Club Is Called to Order

I’d like to present another perspective on the Davis Cup than the one offered by Mike Downey (Dec. 6).
My first-hand experience in Vienna in 1990, watching Michael Chang come from behind after being down, two sets to zero, in the deciding match and defeating Austrian tennis hero Horst Skoff, 6-4, in the fifth and final set, was the most exhilarating sporting event I have attended in my life. With 19,000 fans against him, only a handful of Americans in attendance that day know what a hero Michael Chang was.
I have been to Olympic Games, World Series, NBA and NHL playoffs, USC-Notre Dame and USC-UCLA football games and Super Bowls. Only the 1974 USC comeback victory over Notre Dame can match the drama and excitement of Chang’s Davis Cup victory.
