TUSTIN : Old Town Will Get Design Guidelines

The city has contracted with a San Juan Capistrano architectural firm to devise design guidelines for homes in the historical Old Town area.

The City Council last week unanimously approved spending $25,000 to hire Urban Design Studio to develop the guidelines, said Rita Westfield, assistant city manager.

The guidelines will not be mandatory but will aid residents in new construction and remodeling, she said.

A book of the guidelines will cover everything from porches to roofs and will include construction and landscaping information, technical data and a glossary of architectural terms.

Urban Design Studio will work with the community development staff and the Cultural Resources Advisory Committee for the next six months until the project is completed.

City officials also will hold public hearings and workshops to gather input from residents, Westfield said.

The agreement with Urban Design Studio came about after a series of meetings with residents and architectural consultants.

“It was based on what the people in the Old Town area said they would like to see,” Westfield said.

Westfield said that the city would also like to devise an architectural plan for commercial buildings but that it does not yet have enough money.
