OUTLOOK
The Tritons are probably the smallest team in the league, and Kerhoulas thinks they need to run and shoot exceptionally well in order to be successful. A look at the Tritons’ roster shows there’s not much chance they’ll be outrebounding many teams this season. There is only one player 6-3 or taller. Moreover, the Tritons have to fill a large gap with the graduation of Marcus Guild, a 6-3 forward who averaged 21.6 points for last season’s fifth-place team. Without Guild, now at Irvine Valley College, San Clemente will rely on Ortiz, Mannix and Suckiel--all of whom contributed last season. Ortiz, an honorable mention all-league selection last season, averaged 10.7 points. Mannix averaged 4.7 points and Suckiel 3.6 points. Gary averaged 2.9 points in a reserve role last season. By the looks of it, San Clemente will not challenge for the league title. But there are probably four other teams that fit in that category. Kerhoulas said Mater Dei is “head and shoulders above the rest.”
