PREP VOLLEYBALL NOTES : Mater Dei’s Boland Is Headed to Cal

Mater Dei High’s Pattie Boland has committed to play volleyball next season at California.

Boland, a 5-foot-9 setter, chose Cal over the University of San Diego and Penn State. She played on the Mission Valley Blue club team that finished second at the Davis national tournament last summer.

She was one of Orange County’s most heavily recruited players this fall, despite missing half of the high school season because of a knee injury. Boland, who has a 3.5 grade-point average, plans to study premed in college.

Laguna Beach’s Rachel Wacholder and Capistrano Valley Christian’s Karen Benkovsky have been named to the Mizuno High School All-American team. They will join 22 other All-American players in Albuquerque, N.M., this month for a series of matches in conjunction with the NCAA final four.
