The man who murdered former Beatle John Lennon tells Barbara Walters in a television interview to be broadcast Friday that he never thought he was killing a real person, but an image and “an album cover.” David Chapman, 37, who shot Lennon to death in front of his New York City home in 1980 and was sentenced to a jail term of 20 years to life, apologized in New York to Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono. Chapman, who is eligible to be considered for parole in eight years, said: “I took away a genius, took away somebody’s husband, somebody’s father . . . I don’t expect them to forgive me. I’m not asking that. But I am sorry . . . “
