OUTLOOK
Steve Harris, nephew of Ocean View Coach Jim Harris, steps in as the Spartans’ coach. He replaces Chris Burton, who resigned in September to take a job in Washington. Harris has been busy learning the players and teaching the game. “Getting the job late has made it a bigger challenge,†Harris said. It’s an easier one with Bernard and Robertson around, however. Bernard averaged 10 points last season. Robertson was inconsistent, but at times he was a force inside. Both will be counted on heavily. Hampton is the only other player with any size on the roster, which means everyone will have to lend a hand rebounding. “We’re really young and really small,†Harris said, “but we’ve been trying to look at the positive.†That is a wise philosophy since Harris has entrusted the ball-handling role to two sophomores. McMahon and Furuta will be the team’s floor leaders. They probably will receive a rough initiation through the nonleague schedule, but Harris hopes they will be seasoned by league play. “It’s important that they come through for us,†Harris said. “But I think this team will be a lot like last year’s one. They will play as hard as they can.†The Spartans must if they hope to repeat their third-place finish of a year ago.
