British Stores to Defy Blue Laws: Leading British stores will open on Sundays in the weeks before Christmas in violation of local blue laws, London’s Sunday Times newspaper reported. House of Fraser, Burton Group, Selfridges and Liberty will all defy Britain’s Sunday trading laws as retailers enter the critical Christmas sales period. The paper reported that research by an independent retail consultant, Verdict, suggests that demand before Christmas is weaker than ever, making Sunday trading inevitable.
