COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Simpkins’ Five Goals Spark Golden West in Water Polo
Ted Simpkins scored five goals to help Golden West to a 12-4 victory over Diablo Valley in a quarterfinal match of the State championships Friday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
Simpkins scored two goals in the first quarter as Golden West (31-2) opened a 3-0 lead. Shroder Baker added three goals for Golden West, the three-time defending State champion. Golden West led, 8-0, at the half and 12-2 after three quarters.
Golden West plays Long Beach in one semifinal at 10:15 a.m. today. West Valley plays Grossmont at 9 a.m. in the other semifinal. The championship match is at 4:15 p.m.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:
Golden West 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Tracy Schriber had nine kills for Golden West, which won, 15-1, 15-1, 15-10. Golden West (25-0, 12-0) has won 60 consecutive games.
Orange Coast 3, Cypress 0--Bryn Gillis had 14 kills for Orange Coast (12-7, 9-3) in a 15-1, 15-2, 15-8 victory. Cypress is 2-10 in conference.
At the Golden West women’s basketball tournament:
Golden West 77, Cuesta 55--Melanie Iwamasa had 24 points to lead host Golden West (3-0) past Cuesta. Golden West plays the College of Sequoias at 4 p.m. today in the championship game.
Citrus women’s tournament:
Cypress 68, Glendale 53--Yolanda Hearvey scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds for Cypress (3-1) in the title game.
Nonconference women’s basketball:
Orange Coast 91, San Bernardino 49--LeAnn Kazmer led Orange Coast College (4-0) with 17 points and six rebounds.
