Mission Viejo Gets Overrun by Bishop Amat
LA PUENTE — Daylon McCutcheon returned the opening kickoff 90 yards to start Bishop Amat toward a 38-0 victory over Mission Viejo in a Southern Section Division I playoff game Friday at Bishop Amat.
McCutcheon, the son of former Ram star Lawrence McCutcheon, also returned an interception 79 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead during the second quarter. The Lancers are 11-0 and are ranked No. 1 in Southern California by The Times.
Mission Viejo’s defense played well but the Diablos (5-6) turned the ball over four times, resulting in 17 points for Bishop Amat.
Bishop Amat led, 21-0, at halftime, and took a 28-0 lead midway through the third quarter on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Mike Smith to Trevor Woods. The touchdown was set up by Derek Dedeaux’s interception.
Mission Viejo quarterback Brad Weekes was nine of 19 for 86 yards, but in the second half he didn’t complete a pass and was intercepted twice. Mission Viejo’s offense was held to 28 yards in the second half.
