Loyola Women’s Volleyball Team Defeated by St. Mary’s in Five Games
Wendy Dumbolton had 18 kills to lead the St. Mary’s women’s volleyball team past Loyola Marymount, 8-15, 12-15, 15-9, 15-9, 15-9, Thursday night at Moraga, Calif.
Although the loss diminished the Lions’ hopes of winning the West Coast Conference championship, they can still accomplish the feat. Loyola (18-11, 9-3 in WCC play) must beat front-running Santa Clara tonight and San Francisco Saturday and hope that Pepperdine can beat the Broncos on Saturday.
Deanna Doolittle led the Lions with 21 kills. Dana Bragado added 17 kills and 14 digs.
St. Mary’s is 7-23 and 3-10.
Peninsula High will be one of the favorites in the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the Southern Section cross-country championships at 8 a.m. Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
The Panthers, who won their heats in the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the Division I-AA preliminaries last week at Mt. SAC, may have their best chance of a title in the boys’ division.
The boys are led by Dan Minami, who ran the third-fastest qualifying time of 15 minutes 43 seconds in the preliminaries, and Kenny Goodrich, who was fifth overall in 16:04.
Peninsula is expected to battle Agoura for the girls’ 1-AA title. The top runners for the Panthers are Jaime Artzner, Molly Mehlberg and Julie Meyers.
The South Bay will also be represented by several other individuals.
South Torrance has qualified seniors Marcus Ferrara and Jodi Dailey in Division III-A. Ferrara was the second-fastest qualifier in his division with a time of 16:18.
In addition, sophomore Wendy Sosa of North Torrance and junior Leanne Degazon of Bishop Montgomery will compete in the girls’ Division II-A. Sosa and Degazon tied for third in their preliminary heat in 20:44.
It is the second year in a row that Degazon has qualified for the divisional final.
Top teams and individuals in the meet advance to the State meet Nov. 28 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
The Mira Costa High water polo team will meet top-seeded Costa Mesa at 4:45 this afternoon in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division III playoffs at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.
The Mustangs (24-5) advanced with an 11-7 quarterfinal victory Wednesday over Cabrillo. Costa Mesa (16-1) defeated Dos Pueblos, 9-7. Today’s winner advances to the Division III final at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Belmont Plaza Pool.
Peninsula and Torrance high schools are among the winners of the first Southern Section/Rams Cavalcade of Champions Awards.
The schools were honored for all-around excellence in boys’ and girls’ team sports during the 1991-92 academic year. They will be honored with a ceremony before the Nov. 29 Ram game against the Minnesota Vikings at Anaheim Stadium.
Peninsula was the leader among the girls with 15 points and tied for seventh among the boys with 11.
The Peninsula girls were led by their basketball, tennis, cross-country and swimming and diving teams. The top sports for the boys were cross-country, tennis and swimming and diving.
Torrance also finished in a tie for fourth among girls’ programs with 10 points. The Tartars had strong showings in soccer, track and field and volleyball.
Boys and girls 9 through 16 are eligible to compete in the Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department’s Basketball Hot Shot Contest on Dec. 5 at Darby Park in Inglewood.
