Archive Corp.: Archive Corp. on Thursday credited strong sales of two computer tape storage systems for its record increase in earnings for its fourth fiscal quarter.

Archive, a Costa Mesa-based supplier of tape storage systems used to back up data stored on computer disk drives, reported a fourth-quarter profit of $4.9 million, or 32 cents a share, contrasted with a loss of $900,000, or 7 cents a share, for the final quarter of fiscal 1991.

For the fiscal year that ended Oct. 2, the company posted earnings of $11.9 million, or 80 cents a share, contrasted with a loss of $49.3 million, or $3.78 a share, for fiscal 1991. The earlier year’s loss included a one-time write-down of $45 million in the third quarter for restructuring after the company reorganized its newly purchased Cipher Data Products Inc. in San Diego. The restructuring costs also were related to the closing of some operations and the layoffs of 800 employees.

Revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 1992 was $99.7 million, up 22% from $81.8 million for the same 1991 quarter. For the full year, revenue was $380.6 million, up 10% from $345.6 million.

Archive is in the process of merging with Conner Peripherals Inc., a San Jose disk drive manufacturer. Directors of both companies this week approved Conner’s purchase of all outstanding shares of Archive common stock for $11.25 apiece.
