Guerrero of CS Dominguez Hills Becomes Athletic Director at UC Irvine
Dan Guerrero, who has been the athletic director at Cal State Dominguez Hills for five years, was hired as athletic director at UC Irvine on Monday.
Guerrero, the runner-up for the Irvine job when Tom Ford was hired in 1990, was chosen over Lee McElroy, who is the athletic director at Cal State Sacramento.
Despite being a finalist the last time the job was open, Guerrero was not among an original group of three finalists chosen by Irvine. All three--including Brad Rothermel, the former Nevada Las Vegas athletic director, withdrew from consideration before the job was formally offered.
Guerrero, who was a standout second baseman at UCLA, graduated from UCLA in 1974 and earned a master’s degree in public administration from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1982. He worked with the Harbor Development Corporation before taking a position at Dominguez Hills in 1983 as associate athletic director and adjunct faculty member in the school of management.
Guerrero replaces Ford, who resigned in July to become assistant executive director of the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches.
