Rail Bond Measure Defeated

The Nov. 5 article was very interesting. There was one glaring omission from the endangered projects list--the 710 Long Beach Freeway extension through El Sereno, South Pasadena and Pasadena.

Since the release earlier this year of the EIS/EIR, it has become increasingly apparent that this project is an environmental disaster to not only the cities it bulldozes through, but to the entire region.

Meanwhile, the listed La Verne to Rancho Cucamonga State Route 30, which is generally an acceptable freeway project and a higher priority on the STIP (State Transportation Improvement Projects) than the 710, is in jeopardy. The very popular extension of the Blue Line from Pasadena to Azusa is also in limbo due to the bond failure. It would serve the region better to use the $1 billion for either of these projects. It makes more sense than destroying the historic city of South Pasadena, the lovely neighborhoods of El Sereno or stately southwest Pasadena for an eight-lane truck route.
