PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Giants’ Taylor Undergoes Surgery

Lawrence Taylor underwent surgery for a tear in his right Achilles’ tendon. Doctors said Taylor will begin rehabilitation in about two weeks.

Taylor earlier told Beasley Reece, a former teammate who is a sportscaster in Hartford, Conn., that the injury might cause him to reconsider retirement.

Down to only three available wide receivers, the San Diego Chargers claimed Brian Brennan off waivers and placed cornerback Tony Blaylock on injured reserve. Charger receiver Nate Lewis pulled a hip flexor and could be out two to three weeks.

At least 12 Chargers were fined by the NFL for a fight during an Oct. 25 game against the Denver Broncos. Charger General Manager Bobby Beathard said the fines ranged from $1,000 to $4,000, but wouldn’t give a breakdown.

Kansas City Chief cornerback Albert Lewis and backup tight end Mike Dyal underwent surgery for broken forearms and are expected to be placed on the injured reserve. . . . The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed kicker Eddie Murray after waiving Ken Willis, who missed four of his last five field goal attempts. . . . The New England Patriots signed Jeff Carlson as their backup quarterback after losing Tommy Hodson and Hugh Millen because of injuries. Scott Zolak, a second-year pro from Maryland who took his first NFL snaps in the fourth quarter last Sunday, is expected to start Sunday at Indianapolis.
