Playoff Berth Could Be on Line for Toro Women

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team will try to secure a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs Sunday afternoon when it plays host to Northern Colorado in its final regular-season game.

The defending NCAA Division II champion Toros (16-3) are tied for fifth in the latest rankings with Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire. Northern Colorado (9-3) is rated 10th. Game time is 1 p.m.

A loss could jeopardize Dominguez Hills’ playoff chances because only the top six teams in the rankings qualify for postseason play.

The teams will be selected Monday and the first round of the playoffs is Nov. 7 and 8.

Dominguez Hills was ranked third last week but lost to No. 5 Sonoma State, 1-0, on Sunday.

The Toros defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 2-0, on Wednesday to finish 6-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will be attempting its first-ever series sweep of West Coast Conference rival Pepperdine when the teams meet at 7 p.m. Saturday in Malibu.

The Lions, who have won six consecutive matches and nine 10, are 15-7 and 6-0 in the WCC. Pepperdine is 7-13 and 3-3. Loyola is second in the conference behind Santa Clara (16-7, 8-0).

Loyola snapped a 10-match losing streak to Pepperdine with a three-game victory last week over the Waves.

Loyola has been led by senior middle blocker Dana Bragado, who leads the conference with a .449 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Robin Ortgiesen is second in the nation in assists (13.91 a game).

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team will travel to California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opponent Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.

Dominguez Hills is 6-9-3 and in fifth place in the conference at 3-5-3. The Toros tied San Luis Obispo, 1-1, on Oct. 7 in Carson.

Dominguez Hills defeated conference opponent Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, on Wednesday. Defender Ken Hodge scored the goal in the first half. Forward Gerardo Yepez was credited with the assist.

Yepez, a senior, is the team’s leading scorer with six goals and 18 points. Hodge has five goals.

The Toros will finish their season with a nonconference match against San Diego State at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Carson.

Boys and girls 11-14 are eligible to participate in the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department’s volleyball and basketball classes from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Manhattan Heights Community Center in Manhattan Beach.

The classes start Tuesday and the cost for each class is $20.

South Torrance High boys’ basketball Coach LaMont Henry will direct the South Bay Fundamentalist Basketball Camp for children in grades four through eight starting at 7 p.m. Monday at the school.

Sessions will also start Nov. 9, 16 and 23.

The cost is $75 and includes a T-shirt.

Bodybuilders age 17 to 84 have been invited to compete in the 1992 Kyolic World Natural Bodybuilding Championships on Saturday at the Torrance Civic Center’s James Armstrong Theater.

Competition will start with bodybuilding prejudging at 11 a.m. and Ms. Fitness prejudging at 1 p.m. The finals start at 4.
