The Bruins’ top runner finished second in the Mt. San Antonio College National Invitational meet. She posted a time of 18:26, six seconds behind the winner, in the Individual Sweepstakes race. The time was good enough to help her team grab third place in the team competition. Coach Hartzell Alpizar says Sumi’s goal is to “get to the Kinney meet (a national meet at the end of the season) and run well there in front of the college scouts.”
Other top performers:
Michelle Wineke, the hitter for Gahr, led her volleyball team to a couple of San Gabriel Valley League wins. She recorded 31 kills, five digs, three blocks and three service aces as the Gladiators posted their 85th and 86th consecutive league wins. The Gladiators defeated Paramount, 15-6, 15-7, 15-0, then posted a 15-5, 15-4, 15-7 victory over Downey.
Suzanne Rogers, the Wilson tennis player, recorded six singles victories as she helped her team to a pair of Moore League victories. Her three singles victories led the way as the Bruins defeated Millikan, 14-4. She also posted three wins to help the Bruins to a 13-5 win over Jordan.
