WESTERN ATHLETIC ROUNDUP : Air Force Corrals Faulk, Gets Drop on Aztecs
Air Force grounded Marshall Faulk and used a fumblerooskie to set up Obasi Onuoha’s three-yard, go-ahead touchdown run in the third quarter of a 20-17 victory over San Diego State Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference game at San Diego.
Faulk passed 1,000 yards one game earlier than he did in his freshman season, but was held to 129 yards and no touchdowns in 29 carries.
The only other time he has failed to score was in a 39-12 loss to Miami in last year’s regular-season finale. Faulk entered the game averaging 198.6 yards, best in the nation, and now has 1,122 yards in six games.
Linebacker Vergil Simpson threw Faulk for a three-yard loss on fourth and one at the San Diego State 36 in the final minute. Andy Trakas was wide right with a 49-yard field-goal attempt with 4:25 left.
Air Force improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the WAC. San Diego State (3-2-1, 3-1) fell into a first-place tie for the WAC lead with Hawaii, which played Nevada Las Vegas in a late game.
With the Falcons facing third and 12 from their 45 late in the third quarter, right guard Jim Remsey gained 51 yards on a fumblerooskie but was denied a score when Darrell Lewis caught him at the San Diego State four.
Three plays later Onuoha took a pitch from Jarvis Baker and scored from the three. Baker ran in the PAT to make it 20-14.
Wyoming 31, Colorado State 14--The Cowboys, who had gone three games without a third-quarter score, had two touchdowns and a field goal in the third quarter at Ft. Collins, Colo.
Wyoming’s Ryan Yarborough, who was leading the nation in receiving yards per game, was held well below his 131-yard average but still caught five passes for 74 yards and the two touchdowns, one a 41-yard reception in the third quarter that virtually put the game out of reach, 28-7.
Dwight Driver rushed for 165 yards in 26 carries for Wyoming (4-4, 3-2). Colorado State fell to 3-5 and 1-3.
Texas El Paso 20, Utah 13--Ivory Durio and Patrick Bailey scored on the Aggies’ first two possessions at Salt Lake City as the previously winless Miners ruined the Runnin’ Utes’ homecoming.
With starting quarterback Frank Dolce sidelined with a sprained left knee, Utah (4-3, 2-2) lost its second consecutive game. UTEP is 1-6 and 1-4.
Fresno State 31, New Mexico 28--The Bulldogs beat the Lobos in a wild back-and forth WAC game at Fresno. The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 and 2-2; New Mexico is 2-6, 1-4.
