Leodes Van Buren and Jason Toohey of Newbury Park High rank first and second among receiving leaders in the state, according to USA Today.

Van Buren, who had seven catches for 139 yards and five touchdowns in the Panthers’ 36-31 win over Thousand Oaks on Friday, has 50 receptions for 836 yards and 10 touchdowns. Toohey, who caught six passes for 139 yards against Thousand Oaks, has 45 catches for 668 yards and five touchdowns.

Rushing: Camarillo’s Fahali Campbell became the first area rusher to reach 1,000 yards. Campbell’s 1,104 yards raised his three-year total to 2,637 yards in 416 carries (6.3-yard average). He has rushed for 20 touchdowns. . . . Agoura’s Scott Mitchell has rushed for more than 100 yards in five of six games. Mitchell, who has gained 863 yards in 126 carries, leads Marmonte League rushers with 13 touchdowns and a 6.8-yard average. . . .

Ventura running back Devon Passno definitely is making the most of his opportunities. Splitting time with fellow back Derek Swafford, Passno gained 151 yards in seven carries Friday to give him 784 in 77 carries (10.2-yard average). Furthermore, Passno has scored on runs of 20, 52, 16, 66, 74, 40 and 67 yards for an average of 47.9 yards per scoring jaunt. Passno won the Channel League 100-meter championship and ran a wind-aided time of 10.94 seconds last spring. . . .

Montclair Prep’s Eliel Swinton raised his rushing total to 1,052 yards with 221 yards Saturday against Maranatha. Swinton’s career total is 4,552, placing him 255 yards out of 10th place on the all-time Southern Section list. . . . Chaminade’s Justin Giovannettone has five consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

Passing: Hart quarterback Davis Delmatoff leads Southern Section quarterbacks with 22 touchdown passes. . . .

North Hollywood’s Jimmie Crist is the area’s only starting City Section quarterback who has not thrown an interception. He has thrown 67 passes and completed only 25, but 10 have gone for touchdowns, the most among area City quarterbacks. . . . Valley Pac-8 Conference teams have thrown 30 interceptions and 31 touchdowns. . . .

Palmdale quarterback Terrence Zenno, who leads Golden League passers with 1,057 yards, is also the Falcons’ leading rusher (167 yards, 63 carries, four touchdowns). . . . Birmingham sophomore Marvin Powell has accounted for 21 of his team’s 34 receptions for 280 yards. He leads area City players in receptions.

Offense: Versatile Hart tailback Deriek Charles--who has 576 yards rushing and 438 receiving--averages 14.9 yards each time he touches the ball. . . .

Royal’s Mike Streeter again showed that he is among the area’s most versatile players in Friday’s 35-6 win over Channel Islands. Streeter, a three-year starter at tailback, rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown, threw a 78-yard touchdown pass and returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. In his career, Streeter has rushed for 2,190 yards and scored 20 touchdowns, three on kickoff returns. . . . Quarterback Matt Olsen’s 97-yard touchdown pass to David Brown against Channel Islands broke Ryan Fien’s Royal record of 93 yards, set in 1990 against Camarillo. . . .

Calabasas, which rotates four sets of tailbacks and fullbacks, had its first player rush for more than 100 yards in a game this season when tailback Scott Sistrunk gained 129 against Nordhoff. Sistrunk’s 79 yards receiving were also a team season high. . . .

Canoga Park (4-2, 2-1 in league play), a City 3-A Division team, is averaging only 185 yards but has knocked off two 4-A teams (Poly and Birmingham). St. Francis has been outscored, 105-39, but has a 3-2 record . . . Twelve Highland players have scored at least one touchdown.

Scoring: Buena junior running back George Keiaho, hampered for two weeks by a severe ankle sprain, returned to action against Hueneme and rushed for 228 yards and four touchdowns. Keiaho has 15 touchdowns and 44 in his three-year career. . . . Ventura quarterback Mike Ellis ran for one touchdown, kicked two field goals and made five of six extra-point attempts for 17 points in the Cougars’ 47-7 win over Dos Pueblos. For the season, Ellis has scored two touchdowns, made good on 19 of 22 conversion attempts and hit on two of five field-goal attempts for 37 points.

Miscellaneous: Crescenta Valley quarterback David Fielder has thrown the ball only 31 times, completing 13 for 227 yards. He has run for 145 yards and punted 11 times for 467 yards, an average of 42.5, including one for 66 yards. He has succeeded on 16 of 20 extra-point attempts and all four of his field-goal attempts. . . . L.A. Baptist’s Jim Romero has returned three kicks for touchdowns this season. . . . Notre Dame has two consecutive shutouts for the first time since the second and third games of 1988.

Water polo: A 30-0 victory Friday over Simi Valley moved Royal into fourth place for consecutive league victories on the all-time Southern Section list with 51. Sunny Hills is the leader with 120 consecutive league wins from 1969-91, with Crescenta Valley second (91 from 1969-79) and Riverside Poly third (59 from 1970-87). Royal’s last league loss was to Thousand Oaks in 1986. . . Thousand Oaks won its 20th match last week in its past 21 meetings with Newbury Park.
