TERMINAL ISLAND : Misdirected Explosion Hospitalizes 6 Stuntmen
Six stuntmen working on the Terminal Island location of the science fiction movie “Glass Shadow--Cyborg II†were hospitalized after their hands and faces were burned by a special effects explosion early Tuesday.
Instead of billowing upward as planned, a fireball shot toward the men, Harbor Police Lt. Martin Renteria said. The injured stuntmen were identified as Jeff Habberstad, 31; Merritt Yohnka, 34; Brian Smrz, 32; William Morts, 27; Gregory Sargent, 39, and Anthony Snegoff, 34.
Sargent and Snegoff were in good condition at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. The other four were taken to the Sherman Oaks Hospital and Health Center with second- to third-degree burns.
The Screen Actors Guild, which represents the six stuntmen, said it was investigating the accident. A spokesman said this the first multiple-injury accident on a set in several years.
