Friday night’s scheduled football game between undefeated Metro Conference opponents Bonita Vista (4-1, 2-0) and Chula Vista (3-1-1, 2-0) was postponed because of a fatal shooting Thursday night near the Bonita Vista High campus, Baron Coach Carl Parrick said.
Although the shooting, which was believed to be gang-related, didn’t involve anyone from the football program, school administrators told Parrick they moved the game to 2 p.m. today at Southwestern College in the interest of safety.
“I’m sure they made the right decision, safety-wise, maybe not football-wise, “ Parrick said. “But I support their decision. Any other school would have done the same thing.”
Bonita Vista also canceled its Friday pep rally because of the shooting. Administrators told Parrick at noon Friday of the decision to postpone the game.
“Both teams were very prepared to play (Friday). They get used to get going every Friday night,” Parrick said. “But I’m sure both will be prepared to play Saturday.”
