Commerce Department Division Moves to Newport Beach: The export promotion arm of the U.S. Commerce Department in Orange County has moved its offices from Santa Ana to Newport Beach, next to the western regional headquarters of the agency’s Bureau of Export Administration, the department announced Monday. Michael E. Hoffman, the bureau’s director who oversees export activities in 10 western states, said that the move will make it convenient for local exporters to obtain counseling on trade promotions abroad as well as on export regulations. “This will allow exporters to do one-stop shopping for all their needs,” Hoffman said in a telephone interview. While the two offices share a common library and conference room, they will continue to operate independently, he said. Two top Commerce officials--Susan Schwab, director general of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service, and Iain Baird, director of the Office of Export Licensing--will preside over the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for the combined offices, which have 15 employees, Hoffman said.
