The Games Children Play in Hospitals
I applaud the efforts of health care workers to make children’s hospital stays more positive (“It’s Super Mario to the Rescue,†Sept. 22).
However, I was absolutely stunned by the irony of the statement made by Oswaldo Espinoza, coordinator of the Starlight Express program at County-USC, that his hospital “eliminated the Duck Hunt game, the one with the gun (as) we didn’t want to promote a lack of respect for living species.â€
Just what are the Nicaraguan soldiers that pediatric patient Kevin Murray blew away “with the touch of a buttonâ€--non-living species?
The extremes that people are taking these days to avoid any appearance of being “politically incorrect†in their attitudes regarding animal rights sometimes eclipses their rational thinking about the inherent value of human life and how our own species is being treated.
