Andre Agassi had some built-in excuses but refused to use them.

Third-seeded Agassi, the Wimbledon champion, was eliminated from the Sydney Indoor tournament by hard-serving Patrik Kuhnen of Germany, 6-4, 6-2, Thursday at Sydney, Australia.

Agassi was slowed by a cold and a thigh muscle injury.

“He did everything well,†Agassi said. “I’d like to know how many times he hit the lines with winners. When you hit that hard and that close, it makes it difficult to play.â€

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 15 Richey Reneberg; seventh-seeded John McEnroe struggled past Byron Black, 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 6-1; second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic beat Christo Van Rensberg, 6-4, 6-4; fourth-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated Mark Woodforde, 6-2, 6-4, and sixth-seeded Richard Krajicek defeated Neil Borwick, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

No. 12 Henrik Holm ousted No. 5 Wayne Ferreira, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4.

Agassi said the injury to his left leg occurred about 10 days ago and will force him to miss his next scheduled tournament at Tokyo.

Kuhnen’s first three serves were aces. He had 23 aces in 10 games and at least one in every game.

Patty Fendick upset third-seeded Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals of the $350,000 European Indoors at Zurich, Switzerland.

Andrea Strnadova upset fifth-seeded fellow Czechoslovak Helena Sukova, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3; fourth-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia defeated Natalia Zvereva of Russia, 7-5, 6-2; second-seeded Martina Navratilova beat Barbara Rittner of Germany, 6-3, 6-0; Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria beat Andrea Temesvari of Hungary, 6-2, 6-2, and eighth-seeded Judith Wiesner of Austria overcame Pam Shriver, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Milen Vilez, 21, of Bulgaria reached the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament for the first time with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marcos Aurelio Gorriz of Spain in a $130,000 tournament at Athens.

Second-seeded Francisco Clavet of Spain defeated countryman Tomas Carbonell, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); fourth-seeded Javier Sanchez beat Frederic Fontang of France, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, and Marc Goellner of Germany defeated Renzo Furlan of Italy, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Top-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia rallied to defeat Lionel Roux of France, 6-7 (8-6), 7-5, 6-4, in a $315,000 tournament at Toulouse, France.

Second-seeded Guy Forget beat fellow Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 6-4; Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands eliminated Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine beat Pier Gauthier of France, 6-4, 7-5.
