FISHING / DAN STANTON : Heal the Bay Tournament Scheduled for Saturday

Heal the Bay will have its fourth annual Top Rod Tournament on Saturday in Marina del Rey.

Proceeds from the event will go toward Heal the Bay, a nonprofit group that works toward cleaning up Santa Monica Bay. Competition will be held for individuals and teams.

Anglers can enter calico bass, halibut, sand bass, barracuda, white sea bass and tuna. Fishing will be limited to Santa Monica Bay, with a starting time of 5 a.m. Weigh-in will be at Burton Chase Park in Marina del Rey until 5 p.m.

Entry forms are available at South Bay Sportfishing landings and tackle stores.

The tuna run continued as day boats and half-day boats returned last week with catches of yellowfin and skipjack.

The Los Angeles Harbor boat Sportking fished kelp paddies eight miles off the east end of Catalina Island and returned with yellowfin and skipjack.

San Pedro angler Vince Terzoui caught the jackpot fish--a 29-pound yellowtail. Irma Giese caught a 26-pounder, Sherry Forge had a 25-pounder and John Dominguez landed a 25-pounder.

The Shogun returned Monday from a two-day tuna trip to Cortez Bank and reported that some of the fish that were hooked and lost appeared to weigh more than 100 pounds.

A total of 32 bluefin in the 20- to 40-pound range were caught on the trip.

Long Beach Sportfishing’s Aztec had a catch of 126 yellowfin on an overnight trip.

West Los Angeles anglers John Olson and C.J. Martin were jackpot winners. Both anglers caught 35-pound yellowtails.

Bonito have started to bite in numbers in Los Angeles Harbor.

Last weekend, anglers aboard the Annie B barge caught more than 200 bonito that averaged three to five pounds.

David Lane and Kim Lee of San Pedro each caught a five-pound bonito.

Rose Cadman reports that 201 marlin have been brought to the Avalon scale this year.

Catalina Tuna Club member John Lydon caught a 208-pound broadbill that he landed aboard the Sea Otter.

King Harbor Marlin Club member Stan Ecklund leads the club in marlin tags and releases.

Aboard his boat the Hooker, Ecklund has tagged 11 marlin this season.

South Bay anglers returned from a recent trip aboard the Red Rooster III in waters 150 miles south of San Diego.

Tom Reynolds of Torrance caught a 47-pound big-eye tuna. Cheryl Serrao of Gardena landed a 31-pound dorado.

Two Long Beach fishermen returned Monday from a five-day trip to San Felipe in Mexico. Myron Ackerman and Wayne Carr caught their limits of yellowtail each day.

South Bay catches: Matt Suoka of West Los Angeles, aboard the Shogun and using live bait at Cortez Bank, caught the whopper of the week--an 84-pound bluefin tuna.

Mike Gross of Torrance, aboard the Diawa off Catalina, caught a 38-pound yellowtail.

Paul Taylor of Long Beach caught a 32-pound yellowfin tuna aboard the Toronado off the east end of Catalina.

Rod Alto of Lomita, aboard the First String at Tanner Bank, caught a 31-pound yellowfin tuna.

Pete Lezan of Hermosa Beach caught a 25-pound halibut during a trip to Twin Roads aboard the Sea Spray.
