BASEBALL / AMERICAN LEAGUE REPORT : AROUND THE LEAGUE : Rangers Reveal Managerial Candidates
The Texas Rangers on Wednesday named three candidates to be interviewed for the managerial position in addition to Toby Harrah, who managed the Rangers for the second half of the 1992 season.
They are Jerry Royster, a minor league manager for the Dodgers; Kevin Kennedy, director of minor league field operations for the Montreal Expos, and Lachemann.
Pitcher Roger Salkeld, the third overall selection in the 1989 draft by the Seattle Mariners from Saugus High, underwent shoulder surgery and will miss next season.
George Brett of the Kansas City Royals, who got his 3,000th hit the final week of the season, told friends at a recent party that he won’t retire. He will play for the Royals in 1993. . . . Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens has informed General Manager Lou Gorman that he wants to be traded this winter, according to a close friend of Clemens’. Clemens is one of the top candidates to win the Cy Young Award again.
