Japanese Drug Firm to Finance UC Project: Daiichi Pharmaceutical Co. said it has agreed in principle to provide $20 million over five years to finance a joint research project on treatments for arteriosclerosis at UC San Francisco. The proposed deal is similar to others made by Japanese companies in an effort to tap American medical expertise. According to the preliminary agreement, a research facility would be established on the UC campus in the spring of 1994, involving 28 scientists from the university divided into seven research groups. Daiichi will send its own scientists to join in the project. Although the patent will be owned by the university, Daiichi will have first rights to licenses. The company says it hopes to learn more about how American scientists conduct research. It says it expects the project to produce new drugs to fight arteriosclerosis within 15 to 20 years.
