Four candidates are running for two seats on the Los Alamitos City Council in the Nov. 3 election. Today is the deadline to register to vote. For further information, call the county registrar of voters at (714) 567-7600.
Ronald Bates
Age: 46
Occupation: Incumbent, businessman
Background: Elected to City Council in 1988, current mayor; doctorate in public administration; master’s degree in public administration.
Issues: Supports the Katella Avenue “super-street” project; favors revitalizing the business district to create more jobs; favors term limits of at least 12 years for City Council members; favors conservative financial policies to keep city government viable.

Marianne Stiles
Age: 54
Occupation: Electronic data-processing consultant
Background: Served on the Orange County Commission on the Status of Women (1987); representative to the county affirmative action office (1986-87); member of the Los Alamitos Chamber of Commerce; active with PTA, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Issues: Opposes Katella super-street project; uncertain about council term limits; favors limits on campaign spending; favors increased spending on low-cost and affordable housing.

Charles E. Sylvia
Age: 58
Occupation: Incumbent; electrical engineer
Background: Elected to the City Council in 1975; Little League volunteer; member of the Orange County Sanitation Districts since 1976; former city representative to the Southern California Assn. of Governments.
Issues: Favors Katella super-street project; opposes term limits; favors limits on campaign spending; favors increased spending only for police and public works projects.
