COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Avenges Loss, Beats Stanford in Water Polo

Pablo Yrizar, Steve Gill and Mark Stevenson each scored three goals to help UC Irvine upset fourth-ranked Stanford, 10-5, in water polo Saturday at Stanford.

Irvine (5-6), ranked fifth in the nation, avenged an 8-4 loss to Stanford two weeks ago in the UC Irvine water polo tournament.

Stevenson’s goal with 4 minutes 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter gave the Anteaters a 3-2 lead they never relinquished.

Wolf Wigo scored two goals for the Cardinal, and Irvine goalie Mike Rall had seven saves.

Earlier in the day, Yrizar scored five goals to help Irvine defeat Air Force, 12-3.

Junior goalkeeper Mike Rall had five saves for the Anteaters, who outscored the Falcons, 6-0, in the second half.

At the Stanford Invitational cross-country meet:

UC Irvine women place fifth--Traci Goodrich and Jade Preato placed 12th and 13th to lead the Anteaters, ranked 14th in the nation.

Irvine finished with 127 points, two points behind fourth-place Stanford. Arkansas, ranked second in the nation, edged ninth-ranked Brigham Young, 62-64, to finish first in the team competition. Arizona was third with 113 points.

Shelley Taylor, formerly of Edison High, placed eighth, covering the 5,000-meter course at the Stanford University Golf Course in 17:10 for Arkansas. Tonya Todd of BYU won the race in 16:51, and Karen Hecox of UCLA was ninth in 17:11.

Goodrich finished in 17:32 with Preato only one second behind. Rayna Cervantes finished in 17th place, covering the course in 17:39.

In the men’s race, Irvine placed 11th with 249 points. Arizona won with 35 points and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was second with 94.

Martin Keino of Arizona won the men’s race, finishing the 8,000-meter course in 23:24.

Brian Hild turned in the Anteaters’ best performance, finishing 28th in 24:50. Mike Nielsen placed 35th and Dan Galino finished 60th for Irvine.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball:

Cal Poly Pomona 3, Chapman 0--Pomona, ranked No. 13 in the AVCA Division II poll, easily handled No. 15 Chapman at the Hutton Center. Mitsue Tomoyasu had 13 kills and Heather Matthews had five solo blocks for the Broncos (16-3, 1-0), who won, 15-5, 15-7, 15-1. Tori Heywood had 12 kills and five solo blocks for the Panthers (12-6, 1-1).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Westmont 5, Southern California College 1--Carlos Miramontes scored for visiting SCC (6-5, 0-1). Westmont is ranked fifth in the NAIA.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal Baptist 3, Southern California College 0--Jayna Auer had seven kills and Genevie Wright had six kills for the host Vanguards (4-11, 0-4 in the conference), but Cal Baptist (13-3, 4-2) won, 15-7, 15-3, 15-11.
