EAST ROUNDUP : Holy Cross Defeats Harvard, 30-7
Senior fullback Shawn Sierra gained 137 yards in 12 carries and also scored a touchdown Saturday as Holy Cross defeated Harvard, 30-7, at Worcester, Mass.
Sierra scored from 19 yards out with barely over a minute left in the third quarter to put the game out of reach and give Holy Cross (1-3) its first win.
Holy Cross had beaten Harvard seven times in a row, but the Crusaders still trail 19-28-2 in a series which began in 1904.
Holy Cross, which has allowed only 38 points this season, prevented Harvard (1-2) from crossing midfield until midway through the third quarter. The Crusaders gave up a touchdown in the game’s final minutes.
Jim Bowes had two sacks and a safety, and Tom McDonald had three sacks to lead the Holy Cross defense.
Holy Cross quarterback Andy Fitzpatrick completed seven of 15 passes for 100 yards. He connected with split end Chris Summers on a fly pattern along the left sideline for a 26-yard touchdown 1:44 into the second half.
It was the first touchdown in 11 quarters for Holy Cross, which had scored only 13 points in its first three games.
Fullback Scott Wikander scored on a three-yard run for Holy Cross with 6:11 left.
Mike Giardi’s 14-yard pass to Robb Hirsch with 2:47 left accounted for Harvard’s only score.
