Another small infestation of the destructive Mediterranean fruit fly has been found in Los Angeles, this one in the Griffith Park area.
Agriculture officials said Monday that 10 flies have been trapped around the 3900 block of Edenhurst Avenue, where ground application of malathion bait will be used today to try to contain the outbreak.
The release of sterile flies will take place as soon as possible. No aerial spraying of malathion is planned. One more fly has been found in the Jefferson Park area of Los Angeles, bringing the total to five. Preliminary ground treatments have begun around each find, and fruit is being cut to search for larvae.
Crews have finished ground spraying in the unincorporated area of Duarte and the release of millions of sterile Medflies will begin Monday in Duarte and Pasadena, where an outbreak was discovered this month.
