VENICE : Permits Delayed for Islam Security Teams

Nation of Islam security patrols in the Venice area won’t begin next week because of delays in obtaining permits for guards and federal funding.

The NOI Security Agency was scheduled to begin patrolling 15 federally subsidized apartment buildings on Oct. 1. But Alliance Housing Management officials say there’s been a delay.

Additionally, four of seven NOI Security Agency applicants for guard permits have been turned down by Police Commission officials.

Two NOI Security Agency applicants were turned down for temporary 45-day permits because of their criminal backgrounds, said Police Detective Richard Rudell, who is in charge of permit processing for the commission. Two other applicants were rejected because of unpaid parking tickets, which must be cleared before a permit is issued. The other three were issued permits.

It is not unusual for new companies to have permit candidates rejected, Rudell said.
