The Saddleback Valley Educators Assn., representing 1,200 teachers, counselors and librarians in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, has endorsed Raghu P. Mathur in his campaign for reelection to the board of education.

“Mr. Mathur is a very knowledgeable and hard-working trustee,†association president George Anderson said. “He is a strong advocate of public education and is committed to excellence as well as to fiscal responsibility.â€

Mathur, who has served on the board since 1984, is one of 10 candidates running for three seats in the Nov. 3 election. Members of the educators association will be meeting again Tuesday to vote on endorsements for two other candidates, Anderson said.

So far, the association, which is especially worried about the possibility of future budget cuts, has narrowed its list to four candidates for possible endorsement: incumbent Marcia L. Birch, Jolyon V. Druce, Norma E. Graves and Tim Stone.

The other candidates in the race are John P. Chihorek, Debbie J. Hughes, Gardner K. Hussey, Karen Irvine and Frank L. Ury.

Association members will also consider making campaign contributions to endorsed candidates.
