Foreign Share of Japan Chip Market Rises: The Semiconductor Industry Assn. said the foreign share of Japan’s semiconductor market rose to 16% in the second quarter from 14.6% in the first quarter. The U.S. trade association said the increase indicates that Japan is making progress in its pledge to open its market to U.S. and other non-Japanese manufacturers of computer chips. Under the 1991 U.S.-Japan Semiconductor Trade Agreement, Japan agreed to allow foreign suppliers a 20% share of its market by the end of 1992.
