A memorial service for 15-year-old Alberto Castillo, a volunteer at a La Puente community center, who died earlier this month in a traffic accident in Costa Rica, will be held Saturday.
“He epitomized our neighborhood and who we serve--Hispanic, low-income, latchkey--but he never got involved in drugs, gangs or anything,” said Bobbie Seal, executive director of Delhaven Community Center. “He was just a super kid.”
Born in West Covina, Alberto attended Delhaven’s latchkey program and was a member of the facility’s friendship club and athletic teams. He volunteered as a junior and senior leader and camp counselor, work that earned him a congressional award for youth in 1989.
A sophomore at La Puente High School, Alberto was visiting relatives in Costa Rica when he was killed in a traffic accident Sept. 6. He is survived by his parents, Alberto and Leda Castillo, and two sisters, Adriana and Adel, all of La Puente.
The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. at the center at 15135 Fairgrove Ave., La Puente. The agency is accepting donations for a college scholarship in Castillo’s name.
