French Toast, Molasses Cookies
DEAR SOS: Please provide me with the recipe for French toast from Marston’s in Pasadena. The coating is made with cornflakes and is absolutely wonderful.

DEAR DEBORAH: Sally and Otis Marston sent the recipe, saying it was the “most-ordered item on our breakfast menu. Our regular customers come in for their weekly fix.†However, they caution, “The sourdough bread has to be sour to make it just right.â€
MARSTON’S SOURDOUGH FRENCH TOAST
6 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups cornflakes
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
8 thick slices sourdough bread
Butter
Powdered sugar
Maple syrup
Lightly beat eggs in bowl. Stir in vanilla. Crush cornflakes in shallow pan. Toss with cinnamon. Halve sourdough bread slices. Dip each half in egg wash, coating generously. Roll in cornflakes. Cook on well-buttered griddle or heavy skillet over medium heat until golden brown.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with maple syrup. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

MOLASSES COOKIES
3/4 cup shortening, melted
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Combine shortening, sugar and molasses in bowl. Add egg, beating well. Add baking soda, flour, cloves, ginger and cinnamon. Mix until well blended. Chill dough few minutes. Shape dough into balls size of small walnuts and roll in sugar. Place on greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
Bake at 375 degrees 10 to 12 minutes. Let stand 2 minutes before removing from baking sheet. Place cookies on rack to cool. Makes 3 dozen cookies.
