Whirlpool Announces Layoffs: Whirlpool Corp. has announced plans to lay off 850 workers by the end of November, although some of the workers will likely be rehired next year. Whirlpool blamed the layoffs on sagging sales of medium-sized refrigerators. About 500 workers at the company’s Evansville, Ind., refrigerator plant will be laid off next month and an additional 350 in November. The workers, members of Local 808 of the International Union of Electrical Workers, will be laid off based on seniority, said Deborah Castrale, spokeswoman for the Evansville plant. The company may expand its production force to three shifts in March, but Castrale said she did not know how many additional workers might be needed.
