KINGS : Gretzky’s Puzzling Back Problem Will Be Re-Evaluated Monday
- Share via
They put Wayne Gretzky through the usual strength and flexibility tests when he showed up for Kings’ training camp a little more than a week ago.
No problem.
He went through a rigorous first practice under the direction of Coach Barry Melrose on Sept. 12. The next day, Gretzky played in a spirited but ordinary scrimmage.
No problem.
Which is why the origin of Gretzky’s latest physical problem--a strained upper back--is such a mystery. Previously, he could always trace his lower back injuries to a direct hit sustained in a game. This time, there apparently was no such blow.
Saturday, the Kings reported no new developments regarding the injury that has kept Gretzky at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood since Wednesday night. For now, the plan is to re-evaluate his condition on Monday.
