Hallowell Davis; Doctor Helped Develop Electroencephalograph

Hallowell Davis, 96, pioneer researcher on deafness and longtime director of research at St. Louis’ Central Institute for the Deaf. As a professor at Harvard, Davis helped develop the electroencephalograph, which traces variations in electrical force in the brain. Joining the institute in 1946, he participated in the development of speech audiometry and created a technique for putting electrodes inside the inner ear to permit study of electrical functions of the inner ear.
