PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Marinovich Does Esiason Impression
Backup quarterback Todd Marinovich wore No. 7 instead of his usual No. 12 in practice this week as he called signals for the scout team in preparation for Sunday’s game at Cincinnati.
With veteran backup Vince Evans having been waived last week--for the second time this season--Marinovich has had to play the role of the Bengals’ left-handed quarterback, Boomer Esiason, in practice.
“He didn’t have to wear No. 7 but that’s Todd, the free spirit,†Coach Art Shell said. “It was his decision to wear Boomer’s number like that.â€
Daryl Hobbs, a wide receiver on the practice roster, has also filled in as scout team quarterback. As a senior in high school, Hobbs led the City Section in touchdown passes for University High in Los Angeles.
First-round draft choice Chester McGlockton will not play against the Bengals, but the defensive tackle has practiced on his injured foot this week.
“(McGlockton) is coming along all right,†Shell said. “He wants to play now, but it is going to take time.â€
No decision has been made on whether Greg Townsend will be activated for Cincinnati. The Pro Bowl defensive end has another week’s exemption before counting on the roster because he reported late.
Long-snapper Dan Turk is listed as probable despite a knee injury.
The Raiders defeated Cincinnati last season, 38-14, and hold a 14-5 advantage in the series. Shell is 4-0 against the Bengals as head coach.
