American sprinters swept the top three places in the 200 meters and Canadian Bruny Surin beat former world record-holder Calvin Smith in the 100 meters at the City of Bologna track and field meet in Italy.
Michael Bates, a bronze medalist in the Olympics at Barcelona, edged teammates John Drummond and Kevin Braunskill with a time of 20.53 seconds.
In the 100, Surin was timed in 10.31 seconds, with Smith the runner-up in 10.38.
Charles Austin took the high jump at 7 feet 5 3/4 inches. Another American, Gregg Tafralis, won the shotput with a throw of 66-9 1/4.
