*** T. S. Monk, “Take One,” Blue Note. The drummer son of the late Thelonious Monk has a winner here with a six-piece band that sometimes sounds like a revitalized Jazz Messengers, sometimes echoes with the quirky, offbeat qualities of the senior Monk’s better groups and almost always sizzles with energy. By acknowledging his connection with the past in pieces like his father’s “Skippy,” “Infra-Rae” and “Minor’s Holiday,” Monk has opened an optimistic vision of the jazz future.
