Tennessee Names Fulmer as Interim Coach
Tennessee assistant head coach Phillip Fulmer was appointed interim head coach Thursday until Johnny Majors can return from heart bypass surgery.
When Majors had surgery on Aug. 25, Fulmer was put in charge of “management and coordinator of the football team,†but there was no change in his title and Majors was still the coach of record.
Athletic Director Doug Dickey said the title is “a defining of the position for Phillip’s sake.â€
Fulmer, 42, is the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
The 22nd-ranked Volunteers open their season Saturday night at Knoxville against Southwestern Louisiana.
