FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Oilers Say No to Townsend
Holdout defensive lineman Greg Townsend may or may not report to the Raiders, but he definitely won’t be reporting to the Houston Oilers.
Sources close to the Houston club say that the Raiders have made inquiries in recent days about trading Townsend for former Raider lineman Sean Jones, officially listed as retired.
But Houston rejected the idea. “Sean’s not going anywhere,†said Oiler General Manager Mike Holovak. “We’ve been saying that all along. Nothing’s changed.â€
Raider Coach Art Shell said Monday that he expected Townsend in camp this week. But Townsend’s agent, Neal Allen, says his client has no plans to back down.
Townsend, 30, has been demanding a renegotiation of his five-year contract. He is to receive $1.2 million in this, the second year of that deal.
Jones is in the second year of a three-year contract that calls for him to receive $850,000 this season. The Oilers expect him to show up Friday. That has become Jones’ normal routine. He held out each of the last two years but showed up on the Friday before opening day.
All 17 of the Raiders cut Monday cleared waivers Tuesday.
The Raiders are expected to make some additional moves today, signing players for their practice squad and perhaps re-signing one or more players to their 47-man roster, should they put anyone on injured reserve.
Defensive lineman Chester McGlockton will miss Sunday’s season opener because of his injured foot. Running back Marcus Allen, suffering from a bone bruise in one foot, is questionable.
