BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Sierra Wants to Sign With Athletics
Ruben Sierra, happy with his trade from the Texas Rangers to Oakland, is willing to talk with the Athletics about a multiyear deal even before the free-agent filing period begins in late October.
“The contract will fall into place, I’m certain,†Sierra’s agent, Bob Woolf, said. “If it doesn’t, then he’s a free agent to seek out the rest of the market, but certainly every opportunity would be given to Oakland.â€
The New York Mets acquired triple-A outfielder Ryan Thompson to complete the trade of pitcher David Cone to the Toronto Blue Jays. Thompson, 24, hit .283 for Syracuse with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs. . . . The San Diego Padres brought up right-handed pitcher Gene Harris from triple-A Las Vegas to take the place of left-hander Craig Lefferts.
