Fewer Firms Plan Employee Cuts: Fewer businesses plan to cut staff this year, and the number of companies that plan to hire more employees has inched up from last year, according to a management consulting group. Towers Perrin said the number of companies in its survey reporting actual or planned staff cuts this year fell to 33% from 47% in 1991. The survey found that the number of businesses projecting staff increases rose slightly, to 28% from 25% a year ago. The group said more than 2,100 companies representing 52 industry groups participated in the survey.
