BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Zimmer Is Considering Retirement
After almost 44 years in baseball, Don Zimmer says this might be his last. Unless he gets an opportunity to manage next year or finds a job in his hometown of St. Petersburg, Fla., should the Giants’ move there be approved, Zimmer intends to retire.
Zimmer, 61 and a Red Sox coach, got a taste of retirement when he went home last year after being fired from managing the Cubs in May.
“I went home during the season for the first time in 43 years,†he said. “I kind of enjoyed it.â€
Angel pitcher Tim Fortugno, who has been in the bullpen since Jim Abbott’s return from the disabled list, will take Julio Valera’s turn in the rotation Tuesday. Manager Buck Rodgers says Valera has a cut on a finger and could use a rest.
Rodgers says September call-ups will be decided in conversation today with Whitey Herzog, senior vice president for player personnel.
