David Humphreys Miller, 74, an artist and author who spent much of his life researching the Battle of the Little Bighorn. While still in his teens, Miller sought the Indian warriors who had survived the 1876 battle where George Armstrong Custer led his troops into annihilation; he later painted portraits of the survivors. When Miller wed in 1954 the ceremony was held in South Dakota so 98-year-old Dewey Beard, also known as Iron Hail, the last survivor of the Montana massacre, could attend. Miller, who served as a technical adviser on several feature films, published his studies in two books, “Custer’s Fall” in 1957 and “Ghost Dance” in 1959. In La Jolla on Friday of cancer.
