Break Up the School District

As a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District for six years, I wholeheartedly support not only a Valley school district but other, smaller city districts as well.
Experience has taught me that the distance between a school district’s headquarters and the schools that it governs is directly proportional to both the lack of understanding of a school’s problems and the desire to deal effectively with them.
Japanese business success has shown us that the days of compartmentalization are over and the way to produce a better product is to expand personal contact between all levels of the company. The “team” can only be better served when both management and labor are closer in proximity, increasing interactions which will facilitate both understanding and accountability.
Since we can’t bring the schools closer to the decision makers, it’s time to bring the decision makers closer to the schools.
